At J. Addison School, our commitment to nurturing young minds goes beyond textbooks. We are so proud of Johan W., a Grade 11 student who recently showcased an A.I.-powered Intelligent Heliostat—a solar tracking device—during Markham’s Earth Day celebration at the Milliken Mills Library.
Johan joined J. Addison School after discovering he couldn’t take physics in his overcrowded school. “I came here for a change and a chance to pursue the subjects I’m passionate about,” Johan shared.
As a new student, Johan quickly immersed himself in our academic environment and volunteer programs like Vibrant Markham Foundation, which supports underserved communities and promotes hands-on STEAM education. Through this, he was invited to showcase an innovative AI-powered Intelligent Heliostat. Inspired by the natural movements of plants, this device uses A.I. to lean solar panels towards the sun, maximizing energy collection and promoting a greener planet!
“This project showed me how technology and artificial intelligence can solve real-world problems,” Johan said. “Seeing our prototype move toward an iPhone flashlight was incredible. It reminded me that innovation can be both smart and simple.”
This initiative aligns with our Tomorrow’s Thinkers Scholarship, which supports forward-thinking elementary students with an interest in technology and innovation. This scholarship can benefit families seeking a strong educational experience from Grades 1 to 8. J. Addison School offers a values-driven private education where students learn through doing, collaborate across cultures, and prepare for a future full of possibilities.
